Full Description — 150 words
Wheel the World is the world's leading accessible travel platform, transforming how people with disabilities plan and book travel. Founded in 2018 by Álvaro Silberstein — who became the first person with quadriplegia to complete the W Trek in Patagonia — and lifelong friend Camilo Navarro, the company was born from a simple insight: the biggest barrier to accessible travel isn't infrastructure — it's information. Using a proprietary Accessibility Mapping System, trained mappers collect 200+ verified data points per property — from door widths to shower dimensions. Today, Wheel the World has verified data across 200+ destinations, 8,000+ travel services, and 150+ DMO partnerships across 21 U.S. states. Backed by $11M in Series A funding from investors including former CEOs of Expedia and Booking.com, the company is building the AI-powered infrastructure for the future of accessible travel.
Mission
To empower people with disabilities to explore the world without limits — by building the global standard for verified accessibility data and creating the most trusted accessible travel platform on earth.
Vision
A world where every place is accessible for everyone.
Our Story

The Story Behind Wheel the World

The problem, what we do differently, and the impact we're making.

Álvaro Silberstein celebrating in Patagonia
Our Story

The Origin

At 18, Álvaro Silberstein was in a car accident that left him with C5 quadriplegia. Travel became filled with barriers — hotels that weren't really accessible, activities that were off-limits, information that didn't exist.

With his lifelong best friend Camilo Navarro, Álvaro became the first person with quadriplegia to complete the W Trek in Patagonia. That moment sparked Wheel the World.

⚠️
The Problem
1.3 billion people live with some form of disability — the world's largest minority. They represent $120B in annual travel spend and take 38M trips per year. Yet 74% face major obstacles when trying to travel. The biggest barrier isn't infrastructure. It's information. Fragmented, unverified, and often wrong.
What We Do Differently
We physically verify every property using trained accessibility mappers who collect 200+ data points per location — door widths, bed heights, shower dimensions, entrance types. We don't say "accessible." We prove it. Then we match verified data to each traveler's personal accessibility profile — because accessibility isn't one-size-fits-all.
🏆
The Impact
Oregon became the first state to fully adopt the Accessibility Verified standard — 800+ properties verified, 3.2 billion media impressions. Grand Rapids launched the world's first AI-powered accessible travel agent, built on WTW's data. We are setting the global standard for what accessible travel looks like in 2026 and beyond.
💰
The Business Case
The disability travel market is worth $120B in the U.S. alone — and $300B globally. Baby boomers (75M turning 65+ by 2030) are the fastest-growing segment with the highest disposable income. Destinations that get verified first will capture disproportionate market share. This is a first-mover advantage play — and the window is open now.
Differentiation

What Makes Us Unique

Six pillars that set Wheel the World apart from every other travel platform.

Key Differentiators
  • Verified, not self-reported. Every property is physically mapped with 200+ verified data points — from door widths to shower dimensions. No self-reporting, no guessing.
  • User-centered platform. Travelers create personal accessibility profiles, and the platform matches them with properties that fit their exact needs.
  • Accessibility Verified program. 150+ DMO partnerships across 21 U.S. states, with Oregon as the first state-wide deployment and national model.
  • AI-powered trip planning. Grand Rapids launched the world's first AI-powered accessible travel agent, built on WTW's verified data infrastructure.
  • Founded by lived experience. CEO Álvaro Silberstein has C5 quadriplegia. WTW was born from his own experience as a traveler with a disability — not as a corporate initiative.
  • 180K+ community. The largest community of travelers with disabilities in the world, generating real demand signals for destinations.

What We No Longer Say

  • DEI initiative
  • Niche market
  • Compliance checkbox
  • Just for wheelchair users
Álvaro at Events
"I was the first person with quadriplegia to complete the W Trek in Patagonia. Nobody had done it before because nobody had the information. That's what we're building — not just a travel company. The infrastructure for a world without limits."
Sales — Talking to a DMO
"150 DMOs have already made this investment. Oregon was first, and they now have a replicable national model. The question isn't whether to get verified — it's whether you want to lead or follow."
AV Seal Tagline
"Accessibility Verified isn't a compliance badge. It's a growth signal. It tells the 1.3 billion people with disabilities — and their traveling companions — that your destination is ready for them."

Our Voice

The Manifesto

Our core belief — the why behind everything we build.

We believe the world should be accessible. Not someday. Not for a few. For everyone.

We believe that 1.3 billion people with disabilities deserve to travel — to explore cities, mountains, beaches, and trails — without having to guess whether a door is wide enough, whether a bathroom has a roll-in shower, whether a beach has a wheelchair ramp.

We believe the information exists. It's just not verified, not organized, and not trusted. That's what we're building.

We believe accessibility isn't a niche. It's not a DEI checkbox. It's not a compliance requirement. It's a $120B market that has been systematically underserved — and the destinations that recognize this first will win.

We believe in verification over self-reporting. In physical presence over marketing copy. In 200+ data points over a single accessibility checkbox.

We believe AI is only as good as its data. And verified accessibility data is the most valuable data layer in travel that doesn't exist yet. We're building it.

Verify. Improve. Market. That's how destinations transform. That's how travelers find confidence. That's how the world moves closer to a place where every destination is ready for everyone.

Wheel the World exists to make sure that no one has to say "I can't go there" — not because of infrastructure, but because of information. We're removing that barrier, one verified data point at a time.

This is what it means to travel without limits.

Talking Points

Key Messages

Core narratives for interviews, panels, and media appearances.

"We are the largest minority."
1.3 billion people worldwide live with some form of disability. Add their travel companions, and you're talking about 2.5+ billion people — the world's largest underserved travel market. This isn't niche. This is mainstream.
"Verified data is the moat."
Anyone can build an accessible travel website. Only WTW has the physical verification network — trained mappers on the ground collecting 200+ data points per property. That proprietary data layer is what makes us defensible, and what makes AI agents like the Grand Rapids model actually work.
"Accessibility is a growth opportunity, not a compliance checkbox."
The U.S. disability travel market generates $25B in direct spending and $19B in indirect spending annually. Destinations that treat accessibility as strategy — not obligation — are capturing share that others are leaving on the table.
"We started from the community."
WTW was founded by Álvaro Silberstein, who has C5 quadriplegia. He became the first person with quadriplegia to complete the W Trek in Patagonia — and realized the only reason it was possible was because he found reliable accessibility information. That experience is our DNA.
"If AI is the engine, verified data is the fuel."
The next generation of travel AI — personalized agents, real-time recommendations, predictive accessibility matching — depends entirely on the quality of the underlying data. WTW is building that data layer. Without it, AI in accessible travel is just noise.
"Without the badge, you're not ready."
The Accessibility Verified seal is becoming the trusted standard for accessible destinations. Travelers are learning to look for it. Media is citing it. As more destinations adopt it, those without it will increasingly be perceived as inaccessible — whether or not they actually are. The cost of not having it is growing every month.
Strategic Direction

North Star

The demographic shift that makes accessible travel the defining travel category of the next decade.

The Mega-Trend
The world's largest minority is also its fastest-growing travel segment.
75 million Baby Boomers are turning 65+ between now and 2028 — the largest generational cohort in U.S. history, with the highest disposable income and the greatest need for accessibility. Combined with 1.3 billion people globally who live with a disability today, this is the largest underserved market in travel. The destinations, platforms, and brands that get verified now will be positioned to capture this demand at scale. The window for first-mover advantage is open — and it's closing.

Leadership

Founders

The story of Wheel the World starts with lived experience.

Álvaro Silberstein
Álvaro Silberstein
Co-Founder & CEO

Álvaro has C5 quadriplegia and uses a power wheelchair. In 2016, he became the first person with quadriplegia to complete the W Trek in Patagonia — a grueling multi-day hiking route — by locating reliable, detailed accessibility information that didn't widely exist at the time. That experience became the founding insight for Wheel the World: the barrier to accessible travel isn't the terrain — it's the missing information.

He graduated from UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business and has been featured by Forbes, CNN, BBC, and TEDx. He has spoken at the UN, the Clinton Global Initiative, and the World Economic Forum.

He built the Accessibility Mapping System (AMS) from the ground up — the proprietary system that trains mappers to collect over 200 data points per property with consistency and precision.

He has scaled WTW's mapper network to cover 21+ U.S. states and hundreds of destinations globally. His operational rigor is what transforms the vision of accessible travel into verified, actionable data.

Quotes

"
Accessibility in travel has never been just an infrastructure problem — it's always been an information problem. A hotel might have a wide-enough bathroom door, but if they don't publish that data in a format travelers can trust, it doesn't exist. That's the gap we're closing.
— Álvaro Silberstein, Co-Founder & CEO, Wheel the World
"
Most hotels don't provide detailed accessibility information — not because they don't care, but because nobody told them what to measure or how to present it. We're building the standard, the tools, and the trained network to change that — at scale.
— Álvaro Silberstein, Co-Founder & CEO, Wheel the World
"
We're not building accessibility as a feature. We're building it as the foundation. The next generation of travel AI needs a verified data layer to function — and that data layer doesn't exist yet. We're building it.
— Álvaro Silberstein, Co-Founder & CEO, Wheel the World
"
Wheel the World is building foundational AI infrastructure for the future of travel. Their verified data layer is not just a product — it's a platform. The same way mapping infrastructure powered the first generation of GPS applications, WTW's accessibility data will power the next generation of travel AI.
— Regina Kline, Enable Ventures (WTW Series A Investor)
"
Nobody had ever done the route in a wheelchair before. Not because it was impossible — but because nobody had figured out the information. I found a way because someone had taken the time to document the trail conditions in detail. That moment changed my life. And it told me exactly what Wheel the World needed to build.
— Álvaro Silberstein, on completing the W Trek in Patagonia

Oregon: The First State-Wide Accessibility Verified Program

How Travel Oregon became the national model for accessible destination development — 800+ properties, 3.2B impressions, and a replicable playbook for every DMO in the country.

The Challenge

Oregon wanted to lead on accessible tourism but lacked a consistent verification standard, a unified platform for travelers, or a scalable way to market its accessible assets. Self-reported data from properties was unreliable and inconsistent — making it impossible to build trust with the disability travel community.

The Solution
Step 1 — Verify
Physical Verification
Trained WTW mappers deployed across Oregon, collecting 200+ data points per property. 800+ hotels, attractions, and experience providers verified to the Accessibility Verified standard.
Step 2 — Improve
Gap Analysis & Guidance
Each verified property received a detailed accessibility report with specific, actionable recommendations — turning verification data into an improvement roadmap for property operators.
Step 3 — Market
Accessible Oregon Campaign
Travel Oregon launched a state-wide "Accessible Oregon" campaign featuring the AV seal, driving 3.2B media impressions and establishing Oregon as the benchmark for accessible destination marketing in the U.S.

This flywheel, once started, is self-reinforcing — and Oregon now has 21 states building on its model.

🤖 Grand Rapids, MI — World's First AI-Powered Accessible Travel Agent

In partnership with Experience Grand Rapids, WTW deployed the world's first AI-powered accessible travel agent — built entirely on WTW's verified data infrastructure. The agent answers natural-language questions about accessible travel in Grand Rapids, drawing on 200+ verified data points per property. This is the first proof point for WTW's vision of AI-powered accessible travel at scale.

🗺️ 21 States — The National Scaling Story

What started in Oregon has now spread to 21 U.S. states. Each deployment follows the same Verify → Improve → Market playbook — with Oregon as the replicable blueprint.
